Synopsis

In Sicily, during the first half of the 18th century, as the Island hesitates between barbarism and freedom, an intelligent deaf and dumb girl of 13 is married off to her rich uncle. Marianna learns sign language with the help of a French proctor. In her readings, she discovers the great ideas that are flourishing on the continent at the time and is inspired to fight injustice, misery, hunger, and stand up for herself as a woman reaffirming her sensuality and her identity.
