Synopsis
A teenager, Manuel Jordan, made a horrible mistake. In a convenience store robbery gone wrong, he shot and killed the clerk, a boy no older than himself. He has spent the last 23 years in prison, desperately trying to understand the event that destroyed both their lives. When he is suddenly and unexpectedly released into the world, he is haunted and lost. Wandering ghostlike in the neighborhood where he committed the crime, he answers a ringing payphone that was intended for someone else, and finds a temporary home in a community center run by an enigmatic caretaker named Miles Evans. There, he encounters another person, Sofia Weiling, and is forced to reintegrate into the world of the living. While Sofia tries to escape her problems, Manuel wrestles with his past, and ultimately finds himself drawn to a tenuous relationship with the sister of the person he killed, Adele Easley. When Adele's troubled son becomes embroiled in his own cycle of violence, Manuel is given one last opportunity to explain his guilt.
