Synopsis
The film is a general and typical story of the state of the woman in a society where importance is given to male progeny and education of women is frowned upon. Nirupama has three daughters and is pregnant again. She has earlier been coerced into aborting two female foetuses. She receives a letter from her brother's wife Usha, who refers to a Sage whose blessing can ensure a male child. Nirupama's husband Ramchandra, a science teacher, is opposed to the idea, and so is his mother, but the father-in-law encourages her to go. When she arrives at Usha's house, she is told there is no Sage, and it was only a ruse to give her and the children some respite from her parents-in-law. Usha's home is full of light, laughter, and love. Back home, Nirupama's husband believes that a son is coming, and so begins a comfortable period in her life, though her daughter's continue to be treated badly. Nirupama gives birth to a daughter. She wants to end her life, and also that of her daughters, but realizes that she has no right to kill them, and committing suicide will render them orphans.
